Sowell Gray’s Watson begins term as president of SC Bar

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Sowell Gray Stepp & Laffitte, LLC managing member Cal Watson began his term as president of the South Carolina Bar on Thursday, May 8, 2014. He was sworn in by Chief Justice Jean Toal during the Bar’s House of Delegates meeting in Columbia, SC.
A native of Bamberg, South Carolina, Watson earned his juris doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law after graduating summa cum laude from Wofford College. He has been selected as a South Carolina Super Lawyer for seven consecutive years and has been listed in Best Lawyers in America yearly since 2009.
“Cal has a wealth of experience with the South Carolina Bar that will serve him well in his new role as president,” said Betsy Gray, member of Sowell Gray and herself a past president of the South Carolina Bar.
Watson has served on the South Carolina Bar’s House of Delegates since 1997 and has twice served on the South Carolina Bar Board of Governors. He has previously served as president-elect, treasurer, and secretary of the South Carolina Bar, president of the South Carolina Bar Foundation, and president of the Young Lawyers Division of the South Carolina Bar. Watson is also past president of the John Belton O’Neall Inn of Court.
“His leadership experience, dedication and insight make him an important leader for the South Carolina Bar, the legal community and the public at large,” said Gray. “We congratulate him on achieving this position of honor.”
Watson serves the community as well as the legal profession. He has previously served as president of the Historic Columbia Foundation and president of the Wofford College Alumni Association.
His practice areas at Sowell Gray are professional liability and commercial litigation and business dispute resolution. Watson is also a certified South Carolina Circuit Court mediator.
